The largest photo and imaging show, Photokina 2018, is here and there have been some incredible new releases from a few of the major companies! All eyes in the photography world have turned to Cologne, Germany in anticipation of the debuts.
Third time’s a charm! The company known for having DSLRs that shoot fantastic video have come out as being the third brand to launch mirrorless full frame cameras this year. The S1R and S1 cameras have been the stars of the show. At 42mp and 24mp respectively, the two cameras will be the first mirrorless full frame cameras capable of recording 4K/60fps video. This builds upon the previous successes of Panasonic’s GH4 and GH5 cameras that recorded such high quality video.
Surprisingly, Panasonic, Leica, and Sigma have all partnered up to form the L Mount Alliance, hoping to create multiple lenses that work for different camera bodies.
Surprise surprise, Sony’s been named the number one best selling full frame camera brand in the USA! Their plan now is to develop 12 e-mount lenses in the next 24 months. Sony has clearly positioned itself as the top of the line mirrorless full frame camera brand. The company also announced a new eye tracking autofocus feature that wildlife photographers will love.
One of the biggest announcements of the show was Fujifilm’s development of the GFX 100. This beast of a camera looks to be set to fulfill the role of being the first 100MP Medium format mirrorless camera ever produced. A little brother to the GFX100, the GFX50R, at 51MP will be able to fulfill most peoples megapixel need. This compact rangefinder boasts a 3.69-million dot EVF, built-in Bluetooth, and dual card slots for $4,500. The GFX50R is slated to hit store shelves later this year.
Know for it’s expensive, albeit quality, cameras Leica debuted its new 64mp S3 camera. Capable of recording 4k video, it’s predecessor, the S2, debuted 10 years ago in 2008, had a going price of upward of $20,000
